Alex Gemeinhardt is a young conductor from New York City. He is currently in his third year as a student of Andrew Kim and Adrian Rogers at the New York Youth Symphony Robert L. Poster Apprentice Conductors Program. Having an interest in conducting since age 3, Alex’s formal conducing studies began at age 15 when he was asked to conduct John Corigliano’s Voyage for String Orchestra with his youth Orchestra at the School for Strings.
At the New York Youth Symphony Conducting Program, Alex has had the chance to conduct excerpts from the standard orchestral repertoire, such as Sibelius' Symphony No. 2 , Elgar's Enigma Variations, Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique, Strauss' Tod und Verklärung, Brahms' Symphony No. 4, Prokofiev's Symphony No. 5, Barber's Symphony No. 1, and Dvořák's Symphony No. 7.
Alex also served as the Assistant Conductor to the ISO Symphony Orchestra at Third Street Music School under Barry Stern, stepping in for various rehearsals, and having the chance to conduct Mozart's Flute Concerto No. 2 in their annual Concerto Concert.
During the 2025-2026 season, Alex programmed his own conducting recital, gathering a full orchestra, organized the orchestra parts, and presented the concert, with two days of rehearsals and a concert day. He performed Beethoven Overture zu Coriolan, and Dvorak Symphony No. 8. Over the summer of 2026, Alex will spend 2 weeks in the beautiful Canadian provice of Quebec, where he will study conducting with Yannick Nézet-Séguin & Kensho Wantanabe, at Le Domaine Forget de Charlevoix Music Festival.
Under Yannick Nézet-Séguin’s mentorship, Alex has had multiple private lessons with Yannick, working on select recitatives and aria’s from Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro. He has also attended many rehearsals at the Metropolitan Opera, courtesy of Yannick Nézet-Séguin, observing conductors such as Nicholas Carter, Joana Malwitz, Simone Young, Marco Armiliato, Daniele Rustioni, Manfred Honeck, and Evan Rogister.
